14 WEEK HYBRID WORKPLACE PROGRAMME

THE SOLUTION

Lothian Buses engaged us to create a hybrid approach to the programme. Working on real-life sustainability problems through online and in-person sessions, we were able to bring the apprentices together at the Central Bus Depot where we could deliver directly to them.

Some of the team’s inventive solutions to their set problems included:

  • Setting up a localised combined heat and power generator.

  • Exploring the potential to use biogas as a power source.

THE PROBLEM

Lothian Buses is a large corporation committed to sustainability and reducing energy costs. As an influential organisation, it is important to make these changes without compromising safety and worker satisfaction.

Lothian Buses looked to find solutions that helped develop the confidence, understanding and skill set of their young workforce through the lens of sustainability.

Like many new apprentices entering the workplace, Lothian Buses realised many did not understand their own role within their company, therefore they hoped to find a collaborative, skills-based solution to understanding the wider business as well as their individual and team functions.

 

It’s clear they’ve gained an understanding of how operations work, and what you have to do to move from an idea toward implementation. I was blown away by the depth within their presentations.

Because of the hybrid nature of this programme, the apprentices were able to develop their working relationships in person through engaging and active sessions.

FOLLOW THROUGH ON SOLUTIONS

This challenge improved the apprentices’ approaches to solving problems. They were able to move towards finding a solution while understanding the necessity of modifications, presenting data and costs and acknowledging shortcomings.
