BACKGROUND
Reflecting on his school experience, Andrew noted that he never thrived due to the lack of hands-on activities and the heavy focus on academics, which did not align with his interests.
During his apprenticeship at the Grangemouth Refinery, Andrew was asked to participate in the Powering Futures Workplace programme, where apprentices were challenged with making the refinery a more sustainable environment.
Initially, Andrew was sceptical and reluctant to participate. However, upon meeting the Powering Future team and gaining a better understanding of our aims, his attitude changed and he quickly became engaged with the programme.
OUTCOMES
WORKPLACE PROMOTION
Andrew's challenge proposal led to a pilot scheme in his company, exploring the transition from steam to electrical tracing and the use of renewable energy. His success and communication with colleagues earned him recognition, resulting in an early promotion from apprentice to technician, and then to supervisor within a year.
INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS
His new interest in sustainable solutions and subsequent involvement in the COP26 summit, led to an influx in professional interest from various companies. Andrew now works offshore as a lead instrument technician after being headhunted by Torus BGP.
